  • August Gaul.  1916.  1914 / 1915 / 1916.  Cast iron, blackened, 70.8 mm, 82.17 g

    Obverse: heavy-trunked German oak standing firmly center, leafed branches covering upper half of field; title inscription year-dates to left and right of trunk, last date below ground-line of tree; artist's signature GAUL below latter date, lower center edge.  Reverse: around the edge five bees alternating with five ants, all dorsal view; four-line inscription DAS ALLERMINDESTE / MÜSST IHR ENTDECKEN / AUF DAS GESCHWINDESTE / IN ALLEN ECKEN  GOETHE ("The smallest thing / you must discover / so quickly as possible / in all corners").

    The renowned animalier August Gaul designed this medal to support fund raising for the Red Cross.  The text on the reverse is extracted from Goethe's Faust, Part II, Second Act (Classical Walpurgisnacht), the Chorus of Ants, and exhorts donors to imitate the diligence of bees and ants in finding and providing even the smallest sums for wartime charity work (Klose, pp. 259 - 260).
