The Hall of Shame / Re: Chinese/Russian Crap Infiltration

I saw that and also emailed saying it was a bad reproduction. Makes me wonder the ethics of the auction house.

The Hall of Shame / Chinese/Russian Crap Infiltration

I guess it was inevitable that these poorly copied Goetz pieces would begin to show up in ill-informed or 'make a euro at any price' auction houses.  This auction house was informed well before auction time that this was obviously not an authentic goetz yet they went ahead and took 85 euro from some novice collector anyway.  This crap sells on Ebay for cheap.

So it begins.
August Gaul / Red Cross / eagle heads

(Thought I'd follow the same style of subject as the other posts!)

Cast iron medal by August Gaul, 1915.

This medal was a reward for donating at least 25 marks to the Red Cross in 1915. The obverse shows the heads of the Austrian double-headed eagle atop the head of the German heraldic eagle below a heading of "1914-1915". To the right of the German eagle is "DEUTSCHLAND" ("Germany") and to the left is "UND OESTERREICH UNGARN" ("and Austria-Hungary"), the two central powers.

On the reverse are two naked heroines back-to-back defending themselves and each other with swords, a "mythological" allegory for teamwork. The quote by Goethe "Zusammen haltet euren wert - und euch ist niemand gleich" is roughly translated as "Together you are stronger than others."

Cast iron, 57 mm.

Quick update. I successfully ordered from the link above, it was delivered very well packaged for a total of 40 euros shipped to the US.  Briefly flipping through, this is a very good reference book. It's not as complete as dedicated books such as Keinast (for Goetz) and Zetzmann, but it has a broad coverage and very good photos.

Very pleased to add it to by library. If you collect WW1 medals, I agree with Rabenauge above, this book is worth the cost.

F.W. Hörnlein / Book on Hornlein

Does anyone have a copy of "Friedrich Wilhelm Hörnlein" von Paul Arnold, Max Fischer und Ulli Arnold?

I can find copies on German eBay, but no one ships to the U.S. except for $30 USD+ shipping. I am thinking this may have some good information on his medals.

Hans Lindl / Drei Verbund (Alliance of Three) Satirical Medal

Drei Verbund

Hans Lindl - 1914  Cast Bronze, uniface, incuse reverse, satirical medal, 69.0mm, 58.4g

A French coq, Russian bear, and British bulldog stand wounded and bandaged, the bear licking its wounds and the bulldog still dripping blood.

Lindl plays a word game here by spelling the term 'Dreiverbund' (alliance of three) with "Drei Verband".  The word "Verband" is ambiguous, as it can also mean "dressing/bandage" or, "The Three Bandaged'
