Max Lange  1917 

TOBOLY  —  Cast iron medal, blackened.  93.00 mm; 262.4 g.  Fast gussfrisch (near as-cast).

Obverse: On ground-line, infantryman standing full front, legs wide apart, head wearing Stahlhelm in profile to left, slung rifle, holding Stielgranate (stick-grenade) with left hand, right hand and arm across body to arm it for throwing; title inscription left and right, respectively, at thigh-level; artist's signature LANGE under ground-line right; raised rim.

Reverse: Skeletons of tree in blighted landscape; raised rim.

Commemorates German capture of the Toboly-Helenin bridgehead in the Ukraine, April 1917, in which 130 Russian officers and 9500 troops were taken prisoner, along with a large amount of matériel.
