  • Esseö, Elisabeth (Erzsébet) von.  1918

IN・MEMORIAM・K・V・K・HEERESLEITUNG・V・DIPLOMATIE (in memory of kaiserliche und königliche [Imperial and Royal] Army Administration and diplomatic corp).  Cast bronze, light-brown patina, 57.1 mm, 62.81 g.  Small casting flaw at edge (letter D), otherwise vorzüglich (extremely fine).  Rare.

Obverse: Within a pearled border, Imperial Habsburg double eagle, but with asses's heads and tails, the latter braided and ribboned; on its breast a shield displaying Α / Ω (alpha / omega); title legend surrounding edge outside decorative border.

Reverse: Across a curving central band a procession of naked men, women and children move from left to right, from the sun's rays to senescent darkness, from youth to old age; above the band, upper edge, legend ・1914 ・ 1918・.

Cf: Schulman.  1919.  La Guerre Européenne, Catalogue LXXV, p. 97, 897.
Cf:  Huszár, Lajos, and Béla Procopius. 1932. Medaillen- und Plakettenkunst in Ungarn, p. 199: 1924.

This medal is unusual in the artist's oeuvre, being a satirical piece mocking the Austro-Hungarian regime, and neither signed nor marked with monogram.
